Stewart Edmondson - Golden Tree 2012
Stewart Edmondson has explained his painting outside as definitely the place for him to be. he says he simply feels alive out there...up on the moor or down by the sea.
"The energy of the place is what sparks in me."
"Working outside - the painting often has to be fast and dynamic, because of the changing light and weather...but for me that is a key part of the process - allowing something that is beyond my control to come through...or to come from the place into the painting. It can be direct, like rain falling or wind moving the paint. With that unpredictability comes the magic - the alchemy of it..."
I love the variety and contrasting tones and autumnal colours in the painting. Initially I thought that he had used powdered inks, however, through further research I discovered Edmonds uses watercolour and acrylic inks. Having watched a video interview with Stewart Edmondson I also know that he uses a flicking technique with a brush to create the spattered effect. The image looks very dynamic and evidences Edmondson's technique of creating his pieces outside; exposed to the elements. I enjoyed using the same flicking technique in my own work. The idea of creating work outside giving the medium a life of its own.
